Treatment of Luminal Obstructions of the Large and Small Colon in Horses - Proceedings of AAEP Focus Meeting - Quebec, 2005

چکیده
Simple luminal obstructions of the large and small colon are relatively common causes of colic in horses, and are caused by feed impaction, sand accumulation, fibrous foreign body ingestion, nonstrangulating displacements, and or enterolith formation. Many horses with large colon and small colon feed impactions respond to medical treatment, including withholding feed, administering fluid therapy, laxatives, analgesics, and providing controlled exercise; however, some horses with feed impactions and most horses with sand impactions and enteroliths require surgical intervention. In general, the prognosis for horses with simple luminal obstructions of the large and small colon provided with appropriate and timely medical or surgical treatment is good to excellent.

Survival and the Cost of Our Mistakes - Proceedings of AAEP Focus Meeting - Quebec, 2005
In a large retrospective survey of colics from 14 Universities in the USA and from 2 in the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1984, case fatality rate was 68.2% for the small intestine, compared with 40.7% for the large colon, regardless of treatment. In a more recent study (1987-1991), the survival rate for surgery on the cecum and colon (80%) was significantly higher than survival (52%) for horses ...
متن کاملPrevalence, Demographics, and Risk Factors for Colic - Proceedings of AAEP Focus Meeting - Quebec, 2005
Colic is one of the most difficult diseases to study with epidemiologic methods due to the large number of diseases, which create the signs of colic. Making a specific diagnosis is not always possible in horses with colic; therefore classification of the simple colic is a challenge. Information about incidence, mortality, and risk factors is helpful to the clinician in making decisions about in...

Background: The equine colic, which is caused by the presence of enteroliths that are most often found in the small or large colon, is typical for certain geographical regions (dry and hot climate). A diet rich in alfalfa is one of the highest risk factors. The earliest symptoms include weight loss and repeated episodes of colic pain. Aims: To present the resul...
متن کاملNutritional Considerations for the Colic Patient - Proceedings of AAEP Focus Meeting - Quebec, 2005
There is limited knowledge of the benefits and complications associated with different modes of nutritional support in horses recovering from colic, and further clinical studies are required to facilitate refinement of feeding recommendations. However, there is evidence in humans and other species that protein and energy malnutrition can have deleterious effects on recovery from critical illnes...
متن کاملPractical Treatment of Ileus - Proceedings of AAEP Focus Meeting - Quebec, 2005
Treatment for ileus includes decompression of the stomach, replacement of fluid and electrolyte losses with parenteral fluids, and use of a variety of prokinetic agents. However, there is disagreement as to the effects of indwelling stomach tubes on reflux, the rate of fluid replacement, and the most effective prokinetic agents to use. Therefore, this review is intended to provide a rational, s...
